Welcome to Hemkund Sahib tourism. Shri Hemkund Sahib is situated within the Himalayan mountain of uttarakhis an important pilgrimage destination for sikh devotees. according to legends, during the time of ‘Sat Yug’ (the age of truth), the goddess Durga was once engaged during a battle with demons who had been terrorizing humans gods alike. Seeking help, she fled to the mountains came across an excellent rishi (sage) who agreed to be of assistance to her. Since he was a brahman couldn’t be involved in a battle, he created a Khatri (warrior) who could combat the demons. The Khatri, clad in a lions skin armed with a sword, slayed the demons after a fierce battle. Greatly pleased, the goddess Durga blessed him conferred upon him the name Dusht Daman. Where after, the rishi asked him to meditate at Hemkund which was the site for meditation for several celestials. Hence, Dusht Daman performed an intense prolonged meditation. He was then summoned by the Almighty to undertake the task of being reborn in ‘kal yug’  to ward off evil from the face of the world. Thus, in his reincarnation, Dusht Daman was born as the son of the ninth guru, Guru Tegh Bahadur. the kid guru grew up to be an excellent saint a warrior. He was the tenth guru Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Guru Govind Singh ji mediated on the serene banks of Hemkund lake the Gurudwara on the banks of Hemkund lake is located at the place where he meditated. Sri Hemkunt Sahib has emerged as a popular centre of Sikh Pilgrimage which is visited by thousands of devotees from everywhere the world every summer.

Shri Hemkund Sahib is reached from the closest motorable small town of Govindghat after a trek of around 16km. Govindghat is extremely well connected by road to all parts of Uttarakhregular bus services. If you’re coming from outside Uttarakhyou need to first reach Haridwar which is that the nearest railway station well connected to all major cities of India. Direct buses to Haridwar are also available from Delhi as well as other major towns of north India. From Haridwar, Govindhghat is around 300kms. the most convenient way is to rent a taxi which may take you to Govindghat via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karna Prayag, NPrayag Joshimath. If you wish driving good at it on extreme hilly roads you’ll follow the same route. From Govindghat a trek of 14km surrounded by greenery scent of flowers you reach Gangaria which is another small settlement is employed by the pilgrims as a base camp for stay night halt before proceeding to Hemkund Sahib. This path are often covered either by walk or by pony a Gurudwara here gives shelter to pilgrims. additionally, there are some hotels a campground with tents mattresses. From Gangaria a 3,600 ft climb on a 6km of stone-paved path leads to Hemkund. Overnight stay isn’t allowed at Hemkund Sahib so it’s necessary to start out early leave by 2 PM to make it back to Govindghat by nightfall. The place remains closed during winters due to severe cold conditions snowfall. it’s open for pilgrimage only during summer from June to October

Hemkund Saheb is that the highest Gurudwara of Sikh community Its design, which was done keeping in mind the location climate, makes it the only pentagonal gurudwara within the world. it had been during the thirties of the 20 th century that the place was discovered by Sant Sohan Singh Bhai Madan Singh. Collective efforts of Sikh pioneers backed by the community support led to the construction of gurudwara later on the bank of Hemkund Lake. Nestled amidst seven snow-capped peaks marvellous snowy glaciers. nature is reflected here with all its mighty appearance within the crystal clear alluring water of the lake. Hemkund Lake is fed by the glaciers from majestic peaks referred to as Hathi Parvat Saptrishi peaks. Devotees take the water from the lake back to their home as it is considered Amrit.

Hemkund has also got mentioned within the Ramayana. it’s believed that the younger brother of Lord Rama, Lakshmana regained his health by meditating on the banks of Hemkund after the severe injuries he received from Meghnath during Rama-Ravana war. The Lakshmana temple is made at the place where Lakshmana meditated to regain the health.
